Soffit Insulation
Whether insulating a new building or upgrading an existing one, soffit insulation can be offered to meet all current building regulations. A range of rigid board systems can offer thermal and acoustic insulation and fire protection. Increases to the required thermal performance of a structure have given rise to a significant increase in the use of rigid board systems, as opposed to the previously preferred mineral fibre spray systems. Car parks below buildings will require the soffit to be insulated to achieve the required U value.
Many materials and finishes are available to suit differing budgets and aesthetic requirements.
- FOIL FACED BOARD
Phenotic liner board, typically 80-90mm thick, can be fixed directly to the soffit. Fixings can be taped with foil tape to a uniform finish.
- MINERAL FIBRE BOARD
Mineral fibre board is typically 50% thicker the Phenotic board and can be plain, coated or foil finish. Typically used where fire protection is required in addition to insulation and where aesthetics is not the major consideration.
- HARD BOARD FINISH
6mm hard board (such as Masterboard or Cemlux) can be bonded to either of the above insulation boards to improve the resistance to damage of the installed insulation. Fixings are visible and may detract from the overall aesthetics of the installed material.
- CONCEALED GRID SYSTEM
This installation will require a greater depth as it relies on a framework system fixed by hangers to the soffit. Insulation (typically glass wool or mineral fibre) is laid over the grid and then a moisture resistant board is fixed directly to the framework. Boards are then taped and jointed ready to take decoration.
